Insider Claims PS4K Won’t be Announced During E3

Sony’s revised version of the PlayStation 4 is possibly one of the worst kept secrets in video game history and looks set to instigate a new era of consoles opting for hardware upgrades in a short space of time. Traditionally, consoles had quite long lifecycles and focused on optimisation to maintain one seamless player base. Despite this, the modern picture is very different and there’s greater competition from PC and mobile devices. Clearly, Sony believes the PlayStation 4 is underpowered for VR purposes and requires a new model to properly support the PlayStation VR project. However, the reception so far has been very mixed and I believe the concept has damaged Sony’s brand loyalty. Nevertheless, it seems very likely that the updated console with a much better specification will launch sometime this year.

Of course, E3 is usually the big trade show when huge announcements are made. As a result, most people expected Sony to display the PlayStation 4.5/PS4K/PlayStation Neo during the event. However, according to the respected industry insider, Shinobi602 who often frequents NeoGAF, this doesn’t look like being the case. He recently said in a podcast:

“I’ve heard that Sony will announce the PS4 Neo at Paris Games Week. This made sense to me because the supposed upgrades are coming in what, October? I would have said this publicly if I was 100% sure, but it’s just what I was told,”

This makes for a very interesting situation and I’m interested to see what Sony will focus on during their E3 briefing. Perhaps, they want to simply discuss the PlayStation 4’s core line-up and not be distracted by any upcoming hardware revisions.
